Progeny orchard & ornamental nursery

KVK Ajmer is pioneer in establishing Progeny Orchard & Ornamental Nursery under the revolving fund scheme of ICAR. This has enabled the KVK as unique place for the training in all the aspects of nursery management and plant propagation. It is worth highlighting that several mother orchard (nurseries) in similar pattern has been established at farmers’ fields. Conversely, several lacs of fruit plants like aonla, ber, pomegranate, guava, lemon, bael, papaya etc. are being produced regularly at these nurseries of Ajmer. Along with this, shade net house and poly house have also been constructed to produce high quality saplings of fruit, vegetables and flowers. Every year, 10000-15000 plants of aonla, ber, pomegranate, guava, papaya, bael, lime etc are produced for the benefit of farmers.

Important projects undertaken by KVK

KVK Ajmer has implemented several innovative programmes employing new approaches in the field of agriculture. The programmes are of national repute and involve research in extension activities. Some of important programmes are

• Technology Assessment & Refinement Through Institution Village Linkage Programme (TAR-IVLP) in Ajmer district of rainfed agro-eco system under National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP) of ICAR (1999-2004)
• Adhoc Research Project under AP-cess fund scheme, ICAR, New Delhi entitled “Assessment of Technologies under various micro-farming situations for increasing the productivity levels of field crops, vegetables, and flowers on farmers’ field in Ajmer district of Rajasthan” (1999-2002)

KVK Model for Azolla production for feeding of livestock and birds

KVK Ajmer is pioneer in developing production technologies of azolla as supplementary feeding of livestock. This KVK has developed specific model for production of azolla pinnata. This is a aquatic fruiting fern of high nutritive value and this KVK has developed and popularized package of practices for its production and utilization in feeding of animals, birds, fish and utilization in agriculture. So far, KVK has established 2920 units of azolla at the farmers’ fields and has provided production technology of azolla to several other KVKs, ICAR institutes, NGOs besides several hundreds of farmers. The collaboration has been sought from department of agriculture, Govt of Rajasthan and NGOs for popularization of this technology.

Promotion of organic farming

This KVK has actively promoting importance of organic farming. Besides trainings, demonstrations have been given for production of scientific composting, vermi composting, green manuring and popularization of botanical pesticides. There are 45 vermi compost units at KVK farm which function round the year and are very helpful in not only giving trainings but also in production of vermi-compost and earth worms for direct use as important agriculture products by the farmers. The KVK is harboring Eisenia fetida which is very fast compost-making earthworm. The KVK Ajmer has sold earthworms to several other KVKs and institutions all over Rajasthan and outside also. It may be added here that so far KVK has sold 362 qt earthworms for 10300 units of vermi composting and 225 qt of vermi compost for the use of farmers.
